Back when apartheid was being debated in South Africa, some white guy in an on-the-streets-of-Pretoria interview said that he had given this subject a lot of thought. It was all he had ever known, but he said, he now realized that numbers rule… not logic or morals or sincere gov’t goals to help all segments of society or assigning the best and brightest to oversee social services… nope, he said. Numbers. Apartheid was finished. Gone the way of imperial emperors and colonialism.
When I grew up, there were about 3 billion people on the face of this good earth. We’ve got more than 7 billion now. World population has more than doubled in fifty years. And we’re talking a world population that had taken tens of thousands of years to accumulate – it’s doubled in 50 years! Not evenly either. Not like you take any piece of earth and where there were 2 people before there are now 4. No. Some places where there were 2 people before, there is now 1. And other places that had 2 people before there are now 200. In 50 years.
If you were to start a graph of the world population back at the start of recorded time and then continued it with a mark every 100 years or so, to where we are today, you know what it’d look like? A hockey stick. There are consequences to this.
Way back as man started his accent to be the head ape on this planet, well after the dinosaurs had died, folks were living pretty good around the Mediterranean and out in the far east – even in sub-Sahara Africa – getting by, having kids, moving around, living mostly under tribal rule and oppressive gov’ts with some haves but mostly have-nots. I’m no historian but I don’t think there was much of a middle class anywhere… there were craftsmen and guilds here and there, but they were all part of the have-nots mostly.
Then Columbus comes along and says, hey the world ain’t flat, its round, and all that good stuff you want from the east… well see, now, I can go west – not east – and get there faster and quicker than before. And we can spread the gospel…
And y’all know how that turned out…
Then as mostly Europeans – with their sub-Sahara African slaves – descended on the Americas and took it away from the few indigenous, things really got good and people started making stuff, inventing shit and the new European-Americans began to reach their industrial stride. The number of people everywhere began to grow. Somehow there must be some connection. Whatever, the hockey stick began to take form.
You check most any world population charts and you’ll see that the world population reached one billion around 1800.
Hundred years later – 1900 – two billion. Now that’s quite a jump. But then, hold on, 50 years later three billion – And now, boooom… we got seven billion. The hockey stick.
And what changes has this enormous increase in the world population caused?
You can argue that the explosion of new people indirectly caused 9/11. Used to be that there was enough space on this good earth where you could have the deadly serious primitive Muslim of the middle east co-exist with us Americans in our more hedonistic pursuit of happiness. Especially when the number of Muslim began to go through the roof and they spread out more from Mecca, they started bumping into the American way of doing things, and they set out to punish us for the way we lived. And that thinking, that confrontation, isn’t goin’away. With the number of 3rd world people continuing to climb, Muslim will continue to cast aspersions on America and Americans.
And global warming? Seems to me if you have, oh, 4 billion new people breathing and shitting and turning on lights at night and drinking precious water and cutting trees down and driving cars that emit fumes, it’s goin’ heat up the environment. Did Gore consider this when he had someone write “An Inconvenient Truth?” I don’t think so. Seems logical though, doesn’t it?
Most any social issue can be better understood realizing our recent increased numbers. Prisons, courts dockets, size of gov’t, debt ceiling, welfare rolls, traffic congestion, crowded schools.
People are living longer too. Life expectancy of folks in the US was 39 in 1800. Today it’s near twice that.
And the mass migration of Latinos into the US? Maybe it has something to do with the fact there are a lot of new mouths to feed in Mexico, but not a lot of new jobs. What’s a man goin’ do?
You’ve heard me rant before about Harry Reid making it very convenient for any foreign national from south of the border to live in southern Nevada. To work here, drive a car here, go to school here. Get social security. Maybe sometime in the future even vote the democratic ticket here. Going from bumfuck Guatemala to Las Vegas for work just isn’t difficult anymore.
But in sizing up the real threat caused by the population explosion, consider this chart of people in the US:
You see the swell of the “baby boomers” and how there are as many boys as girls in the lower age groups but that the ladies dominate the few numbers in the very upper groups.
Of the 20 age stratus, I’m in the 14th … which indicates to me that I got a lot of living left, ‘cause I’m goin’ straight to the top. Don’t know what I’m goin’ to do when I get there, other than pee in my pants and eat baby food, but by-God I’m intent on getting there. Me and all those ladies. Have no immediate plans to get off this chart.
Now take a look at this:
You know what it is?
Population graph of Nigeria. (google the net, you’ll find this chart used in several creditable studies.)
There are half-again more kids 0-4 of age in Nigeria than there are in the U.S. And my guess is the symmetry of this chart will continue and the next 0-4 group in Nigeria will be even larger.
And I’m thinking this chart shows similarities to the demographics of many other 3rd world countries.
Seems to me all this represents a tsunami just off the horizon with billions of new people being born and growing up, some heading our way. Many looking to us for food and protection. Angry some of ‘um that we got all this stuff and they ain’t got squat.
Although our gov’t hires a lot of people, I don’t think there’s anyone employed who’s responsible for sounding the alarm as to conspicuous, inevitable future problems… FEMA’s mostly after the fact. Maybe everyone assumes our gov’t just naturally anticipate world crises… that we’ve got smart people in Washington with fore sight.
I don’t think so…
No wait Gore said something about Global Warming which is at best a nebulous subject like the weather, and anyone can predict the weather.
So between you and me, what’s really goin to happen… what does this continuing enormous growth in the world population portend for our future?
When the world population reaches 10 billion, most of the young will be uneducated, poor folks in the 3rd world. Simple crowd control is goin’ consume us all, take up precious resources, and cause strife and anger most everywhere. The have-nots will be out after the haves… because numbers rule.
And it isn’t that we are protected in the US because we have ocean moats on our east and west. We have an enemy within.
This isn’t discussed much, but 29 percent of white children are born to unmarried women; 53 percent of Latinos and 73 percent of black children…. Often these kids are the unwanted results of recreational sex.
What chance do they have to make themselves into productive members of our society? Most researchers say that illegitimacy increases a child’s risk of emotional problems and falling into poverty. That sounds right, plus life’s tough and unless you get some tips from an at-home Dad and an unstressed, sober and responsible Mother, how you goin’ know what’s right, what it takes to be successful? What’s goin’ to nurture a sense of community or country pride? You don’t get those lessons on the streets, or wherever these basically unwanted kids grow up.
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe our gov’t’s policies will make something of these young Americans.
But this gov’t we got now – it seems to be, but I could be wrong – is trampling all over the constitution, taking what appears to be an anti-America position that the constitution is subtly apartheid because it structured a gov’t for rich people of European extraction. Black were chattel at the time – slaves – and the constitution didn’t allow them any rights, so it isn’t their creed.
Divisive reasoning that’s powerfully self-destructive…
But John Adams said there never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.
Who knows. We’re sure not doin’ much to make for a long, successful life for our counry in what’s soon goin’ be a crowded mother earth. There’s no evidence that common sense, or good will, or strong awareness or a committed citizenry will prevail. Things my friends ascribe to.
In fact we see the opposite taking root today. Obama’s the first of his mindless, inept kind to lead our herd. His “change” takes the country away from the traditional American ideals I believe in. And there will be others like him in the future..
Simple numbers… uneducated, unemployed and purposeless numbers … will rule our future. Hunch-back of Notre Dame egalitarianism. Not much hope for the GOP and Ol’ Glory. The meek (of mind) will inherent the earth.
Close the city and tell the people
That something’s coming to call
Death and darkness are rushing forward
To stamp light from the wall!
“Mob Rules” lyrics by the Black Sabbath band
Sure hope me and the Black Sabbath is wrong.
