9 July 1993 a group of law students paid a visit to the 200 man law firm of Holden Day Wilson, located on the 24th floor of the glass encased Dominion Bank Tower building in downtown Toronto, Canada.
During the course of the visit they were escorted into the office of 38 year old partner Garry Hoy, by reputation the “best and brightest” in the firm.
The dramatic floor to ceiling outer glass windows became an item of conversation. Someone expressed fear that the glass might break if someone tripped and fell into it. Hoy said “not to worry,” and to demonstrate the safety of the glass, he hurled – with a smile on his face -his 160 pound lawyer body at the window by his desk.
The glass broke… and Hoy fell through – out into space – and then 24 floors down to his death in the courtyard below.
That’s a true story.
There is a lesson here we can use in our less than 24 floor high lives. Not sure what it is. Though whenever someone yells out “Hoy there!” remember Garry… and duck.
